Tiger Tales 2017, Poetry, 1st place

Here is Poetry winner freshman Archer Johnson's "No Hijab Today":

I feel filthy,

And I shouldn't.

I feel sinful,

And I'm not.

The television tells me,

What my president calls me.

A radical, a terrorist,

A monster, a freak.

A text from my mother,

With words that strike fear into me.

Words never uttered from a mouth,

So religious as my mother’s.

I can almost feel her sadness,

Through the phone.

“No hijab today.”
