Owning Up

I get it that bullfighting is barbaric. Torturing, humiliating and killing beasts amid pomp and pageantry won’t win you awards from PETA. Defenders claim they respect the bulls, which live better than other cattle, and it’s an art form important to their culture. The pain in Spain is in mainly in these folks’ brains. We would never dream of such things in America, where the Ultimate Fighting Championship — which puts two humans in an eight-sided cage to pummel each other until only one can emerge on his/her own — was sold for $4 billion last week. UFC president Dana White will endorse Donald Trump at this week’s Republican Convention in Cleveland — an event I can’t wait to miss for all sorts of reasons.

In the musical “My Fair Lady,” Professor Higgins has Eliza Doolittle — the Cockney flower girl he is training to pronounce her long-a’s correctly — sing “The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain.”

If I flew through Spain I’d stay on the plane as well after last week’s goring of matador Victor Barrio triggered a Twitter war.

“A bullfighter has died,” read one tweet. “One less torturer and today the planet is a little more clean of all this (expletive).”

“The death of bullfighters like Victor Barrio makes me happy,” read another. “He had no pity for the bulls he killed and I feel no pity for his death.

“We will dance on your grave,” teacher Vicente Belenguer Santos wrote on Facebook, “and (expletive) on the wreaths they place for you!”
