Government Snooze
Scott Sullivan
The threat posed by Homeland Security joins the drain caused by Energy, injustices done by Justice and other services federal departments furnish.

The use and misuse of paid federal leave is getting increased attention, the Washington Post says, because of Homeland Security department cases such as these:

• A law enforcement officer, on leave for more than three years while being investigated for criminal and administrative misconduct, was paid $455.000 in salary and benefits for not working.

• Another staffer, on leave for more than three years, received close to $340,000.

• A third worker, put on leave more than 20 months after showing hostile behavior at work, collected full pay and benefits 20 months before being fired.

I think these paid leaves should be extended. Never has our homeland been more secure than since President Bush started this department after 9/11.

So what if the terrorists had already fled the barn? We could still secure doors against millions of law-abiding travelers at airports, justify spying on private citizens, abuse civil rights and otherwise show bin Laden his crimes had no effect on the freedoms we cherish as Americans. So what if it’s cost us billions?

Aren’t we better off paying corrupt workers not to work?
