Corrupt? Who's Corrupt
Scott Sullivan
My point is not to pick Cindy’s political carcass barer. It’s to point out that even though southwest Michigan doesn’t get national ink like Detroit or Chicago for rogue politi-cians, we don’t take a back seat—whether in an SUV or Mercedes—either.

Former local state Rep. Cindy Gamrat has nothing on Detroit’s Virgil Smith, who plans to resign his Senate April 12 after starting 10 months in jail for shooting his ex-wife’s Mercedes Benz.

Smith agreed to step down from his job—which pays $71,685 annually plus all the benefits, perks and PAC opportunities Michigan taxpayers hand our lawmakers for, well, what?—as part of a plea deal.

He will collect $2,987 from us for his two weeks in jail prior to April 12, plus free room and board from us then and after.

Last we heard from Cindy—expelled by House peers last fall for allegedly misusing state resources to cover up her affair with fellow Tea Party Rep. Todd Courser—she faced two felony counts of misconduct in office, lawsuits from former aides and a divorce from the farther of their three children. She had an eventful eight months representing us.
