Best Town Ever
Scott Sullivan
Turns out we lost in the first round to Ely, Minn. “Where?” you ask. It’s the place that beat us in a 2010 online poll for the Coolest Small Town in America. As far as cool goes, it’s near Duluth; what would you expect? Between all their Best Ever things to do, Ely’s 3,480 residents still found time to outvote us online. Oh well, wait till next year. And next. And next …

I was thrilled to hear Saugatuck was a top-64 contender in Outside magazine’s annual online poll for the “Best Town Ever.” So what if the only criteria is most votes (i.e. website hits Outside can pitch to advertisers) and they pick a Best Town Ever every year?

Duluth, Minn.—a city so cool it’s arctic—won last year. Other Best Towns have been Park City, Utah; Richmond, Va., and Chattanooga, Tenn.

My question: What part of “ever” doesn’t Outside get? I understand why they bracket two towns against each other each week to extend the process—so they can milk hometown pride for all the hits they can get.

Still, why not hold votes monthly, weekly or even hourly till we can all be The Best Town Ever? It would be no more contrived than reality TV shows.
