Last week’s bashes here saw us perched upon precipices as well. God-fearing Douglas celebrated Fat Tuesday as our last chance to gorge on fatty foods, dress in masks and enjoy public drunkenness and debauchery before Lent starts. At the stroke of midnight all that ended.

Chinese are fretting over the Year of the Sheep they rang in last week. The world’s second-largest economy shut down for seven days while they partied.

Still, they’re worried. Having partaken myself in two Mardi-Marty parties last week—one for Mardi Gras, the other for “Doc Marty” Raebel’s retirement—I know the feeling. Drown sorrows now and they’ll drown you later.
