Otsego blackbelt busts boards to fight cancer
OTSEGO—Geoffrey Spohn is shown during the finale of his “Karate for the Cure” fundraiser Saturday, Oct. 24—when he attempted to break 15 boards.
While the boards didn’t break in a single attempt, Spohn said the day was obviously still important to him to honor his mother, a breast cancer survivor.
Spohn leads the West Michigan Karate Academy at Otsego Health and Fitness, 111 N. Farmer St., Otsego. Having earned several blackbelts in karate, he wore a pink one to honor the cause Saturday.
“I do know that we blew away our $1,000 goal,” he said at the event.
The day combined his board-breaking feat, his students’ “Strike-a-Thon,” a bake sale, a 50/50 raffle and a prize drawing of a three-month gym membership.
Final fundraising numbers came in at $2,100 thanks to students and local area businesses, Spohn said.
