Society trustee Wayne Healey said flooding is generally contained to the electrical room, but does seep into the general basement storage area as well, as seen here. After 44 years as an electrician, Healey said he joined the board about a year ago to help with building maintenance.Ryan Wieber addresses the crowd of approximately 40 people, including Molly Wieber (left) and Linda Sleeman, about the future of the society's museum.

Otsego Area Historical Society and Museum is planning to revamp the organization with new volunteers and ideas to allow the museum not only to survive, but also thrive, after the long winter.

At an informational meeting Thursday, May 15, society trustee Ryan Wieber gave a detailed look into the group, giving background and explaining how the museum got from where it started to where it is today to the crowd of approximately 40 people.

Typically, Wieber said, the society and museum balance the budget with revenue and expenditures both totaling approximately $12,500 annually.

Currently, there is $3,100 in the society’s checking account; usually at this time the checking funds total closer to $6-7,000, Wieber said.

The group also faces building concerns. The building is poorly insulated and faces flooding and seeping issues.

Wieber said, “Ever since our first year here we’ve been dealing with water issues.”

Wieber remains optimistic for the future of the society and museum.

“Our immediate goal is to get past this crisis with new volunteers and leadership,” he said. “Our second goal is to bring in funds and third is to have a back-up plan.”
