Gun Plain Township honors Bud Warnement's 'Outstanding Achievement'

Virginia Ransbottom, Staff Writer

“There’s only one Bud,” was just one of the sentiments directed towards  Bud Warne-ment, who has served with the Plainwell and Gun Plain Township fire departments for more than 65 years and as a Gun Plain Township board trustee for 40.
But as the saying goes, it’s not the years in his life that count. It’s the life in his years. For spending his life dedicated to the community, Warnement was honored with a certificate for “Outstanding Achiev-ement” by the Gun Plain Township Board April 2.
Firefighters showed up in dress uniforms to pay respects to Warnement, who has been there to share his wisdom with generations of firefighters.
“We’re still all here because of you,” said fire chief Tom Meert.
Meert said Warnement was the fire chief for Plainwell until the department split with Gun Plain Township. Since Warnement could not be chief of the township fire department and on the township board at the same time, he became the assistant chief.
“But he was still the main man because I didn’t want to do it,” Meert said. “He was also like a step-dad to me when my dad passed away and I can’t appreciate more what he’s done for me.”
