Collins helps hockey team win gold at State Games
After watching Detroit Red Wings games on TV as an elementary schooler, Lucas Collins decided he wanted to give hockey a try. There was only one problem.
“I couldn’t skate so well,” said Collins, who will enter eighth grade at Plainwell Middle School in September.
To remedy this, Collins attended a Learn to Skate event at 9 years old. The rest, as they say, is history.
Collins, now 13, helped his District 6 hockey team win the gold medal in the U13 division at the State Games of Michigan. District 6 clinched the gold with a 4-1 victory over District 1 in the title game on Sunday, June 22.
Collins was in goal for the championship contest.
“At first I just took a moment to realize we had accomplished our number-one goal as a team,” Collins said of his reaction to winning. “I also felt relieved and satisfied that all our practice time and teamwork had paid off to win us the gold.”
The tournament involved playing five games in four days, with single games on Thursday, Friday and Sunday and two games on Saturday.
