Saugatuck cited as top ‘Escape’
Saugatuck is one of America’s 20 Best Summer Weekend Escapes, USA Today says.
The newspaper is taking votes for its “10 Best Readers’ Choice” listing at www.10 best.com/awards/travel/best-summer-weekend-escape through May 26 at noon.
“Weekend trippers to Saugatuck, on the coast of Lake Michigan, come for its artistic community, local dining, numerous B&Bs and plentiful outdoor options, including relaxing on the beaches of the lake or conquering the area sand dunes,” says the newspaper, which gives persons through Monday, May 26, at noon to vote for their favorites.
“The downtown streets of Water and Butler are lined with cute shops and galleries, while the stretch of the Blue Star Highway just south of town is famous for its antiquing,” it says.
Other USA Today nominees include Annapolis, Md.; Asheville, N.C.; Bainbridge, Wash.; Cannon Beach, Ore.; Charlottesville, Va.; Dahlonega, Ga.; Estes Park, Colo.; Galveston, Texas; Granbury, Texas; Julian, Calif.; Lafayette, La.; Louisville, Ky.; Martha’s Vineyard, Mass.; Santa Barbara, Calif.; Sedona, Ariz.; Sonoma, Calif; Valley Forge, Pa.; and Woodstock, N.Y. Winners will be announced Wednesday, May 28.
Saugatuck also remains in the running for Coastal Living magazine’s competition for America’s Happiest Seaside Town, even though there’s no sea to see for 1,000 miles.
But there is Lake Michigan, close enough to make it one of CL’s 10 finalists. The magazine will announce winners in its July/August issue.
