Martin girls post win over host Blackhawks
First-year Fennville girls’ basketball coach Josh Wiemer likes the makeup of his team.
Ditto for first-year Martin coach Ben Schipper.
“We have a great bunch of girls who always give me their best,” Weimer said after the SAC Lakeshore-leading Clippers beat Fennville 52-41 on Friday, Jan. 16.
Schippers’ outfit stayed undefeated at 10-0 by holding off the Blackhawks.
“We had another game tonight where everyone contributed to this win,” Schipper said.
It’s been that way all season for the Clippers, who were previously coached by Doug MacVean.
MacVean left Schipper with several outstanding players he could count on for strong performances.
“There’s no question that I’m very fortunate to join a program that has been strong for years,” Schipper said.
Even though his team came up short, Weimer couldn’t have been more pleased with the way his team battled for 32 minutes.
“No complaints,” he said. “Our girls always play hard and give it everything they have every game out.”
Senior Coryne Howard led the offensive charge for Fennville with 25 points.
“She works hard and can really shoot the ball,” Weimer said. “There’s nothing not to like about Coryne.”
Some of Howard’s points came from extra-long range.
“That girl can really shoot,” said Schipper. “I can see why she’s being recruited by several colleges.”
Martin led 16-9 after one period. Fennville, behind the shooting of Howard and Christal Castillo, cut that lead to 22-18 at the halftime break.
“Our girls battled. They knew what they were facing,” Schipper said.
Martin broke open the tight game by outscoring the Blackhawks14-8 in the third stanza behind the shooting of Faith Guritz (17 points), Bri Warner (14 points) and Kiaya Warner (nine points).
“They have a lot of weapons,” Weimer said.
Bri Warner also had 10 rebounds for the double-double as well as four assists, while Guritz had eight rebounds and four steals. Kiaya Warner added five steals and four assists.
Castillo and Jackie Jaimes dropped in nine and five respective points for Fennville.
