Ship 'N Shore scales back river raft request

Scott Sullivan
The change by and large met approval from Ship ‘N Shore neighbors, many of whom had expressed alarm about boat congestion at a busy-yet-narrow point of the waterway.

Ship ’N Shore Motel & Boatel has scaled back its request to raft and moor boats off its Saugatuck seawall almost midway into the Kalamazoo River.

The 528 Water St. business asked the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality Dec. 3 for a permit to raft and moor vessels 90 to 95 feet into the river, which ranges from 216 to 226 feet wide from there.

Many of the 30-some citizens who attended the April 11 public hearing on the matter at Saugatuck High School learned Ship ‘N Shore had revised its request 12 days earlier.

The firm now seeks broadside dockage extending 54 to 59 feet into the river along its 269-foot-long bulkhead: a 36-foot or 40-percent reduction.
