Douglas, Saugatuck Township join Blue Star Trail plan

“It will provide another recreational avenue, which promises to expand our already-growing base of residents,” said Friends of the Blue Star Trail president Jeanne VanZoern. “And reduce a few users’ waistlines.”

Look for bike path construction west of Blue Star Highway to start this summer in Douglas and extend through the city and Saugatuck Township limits in years to come.

The local governments have agreed with Friends of the Blue Star Trail to own and maintain links within their boundaries as parts of an estimated $5-million, 19.5-mile nonmotorized path from South Haven to Saugatuck Township’s existing path built in 2007.

That stretch, in turn, connects to Laketown Township’s 5.75-mile path built four years ago, which leads north to similar ones in Holland and Grand Haven. State enthusiasts hope eventually to connect a trail from Chicago north to the Mackinac Bridge and, perhaps, beyond.
