Saugatuck softball hopes to contend for division crown

Jason Wesseldyk, Sports Editor

In terms of wins, the 2013 season was the best for the Saugatuck softball program since, well, ever.
“We’re coming off a school-record 21 wins,” Indian coach Matt Diaz said.
If Saugatuck is to approach that victory total this season, then it will need to fill the void left by catcher Nikki Kupres and pitcher Kiah Eveland.
As a senior, Kupres set school records for batting average (.578), hits (59), RBI (48) and home runs (four) en route to an All-State selection. Eveland hit .453 with 28 hits—17 for extra bases—to go with a school-record 20 wins, along with a 2.52 ERA and 121 strikeouts.
