Detailed concept to be unveiled for Allegan riverfront redesign
By Ryan Lewis
Taking hundreds of suggestions and ideas about redesigning Allegan’s riverfront and turning them into one concept may not be easy, but that’s exactly what a team from Michigan State University intends to present.
Allegan was one of five cities statewide to gain help through a program called PlacePlans, which brings together expertise from the Michigan State Housing Development Authority, the Michigan Municipal League and Michigan State University’s School of Planning, Design and Construction.
MSU associate professor Warren Rauhe led a design meeting, called a charrette, in January and has since worked with several of the university’s students to come up with a concept plan. It will be presented Thursday, April 11, at 7 p.m. at Griswold Auditorium.
“Feedback from the design charrette and follow-up comments have been very helpful,” Rauhe said. “We will be presenting a single concept plan and many detailed sketches/images at our April 11 meeting for further community feedback.”
He said the images his team will present were designed to convey the physical look and feel of the riverfront.
“The format for the evening will be a presentation by our design team and then an opportunity for feedback,” he said. “We will take the feedback and develop a final plan, images and report for presentation in June.”
An informational session about the project in December drew 125. City manager Rob Hillard said hundreds then attended the January charrette, where Rauhe and his students presented two broad design ideas; he invited the public to post on them sticky notes of comments and suggestions.
Hillard said, “The community has embraced this opportunity and has fully participated in this effort. The downtown riverfront is a cherished area for the community of Allegan, and we need your continued participation.”
The April 11 meeting, Hillard said, “is truly an opportunity to see (the public’s) ideas come to life and create the ‘Big Wow’ we have discussed.”
The project area includes the downtown riverfront properties adjacent to M-89, the Second Street Bridge, the riverfront parking area, Griswold Auditorium and Allegan District Library.
