FENNVILLE—In a battle of archrivals, Fennville proved too much for Saugatuck.

The Blackhawks scored six unanswered goals in the first half and added two more in the second half to end the game via the mercy rule, 8-0.

With the win, Fennville improved to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in league play.

Hector Elizondo and Daniel DeLucas paced the Fennville offense, which had 20 shots on goal, with two goals each. Baldo Almazan, Orlando Flores, Eddie Contrerras and Ricky Flores chipped in with one goal apiece.

Contrerras also picked up a pair of assists, with Orlando and Ricky Flores each collecting one assist to go with their respective goals.

Kyle Wedekind made 12 saves in the loss for Saugatuck.

“This is our first year as a varsity sport, so it’s a building year for us,” Saugatuck assistant coach Becky Carten-Crandell said. “But with eight players who are freshmen or sophomores, we have a lot to build on for the future.”

Although Saugatuck failed to score, Carten-Crandell was pleased with the offensive play of Austin Marineau.

“Austin played great,” Carten-Crandell said.

Esteban Suarez was credited with the shutout in goal for Fennville, while Reid Sexton, Robert Morales, Luis Mendoza and Ricky Flores provided solid defensive efforts.

Otsego 1 Kelloggsville 0

Fans who prefer defense over offense would have loved Otsego’s non-conference game with Kelloggsville on Monday, Sept. 8.

In a game that featured a grand total of one goal, the Bulldogs prevailed, picking up their second straight win and improving its record to 3-4.

Keeper Anthony Trobeck finished with 17 saves for Otsego in the shutout.

Kyle Lincoln was the offensive hero of the game, scoring the lone goal. Eric Dennis was credited with the assist.

Allegan 7 Delton 0

Allegan dominated play and game away with a shutout win in its non-league contest over Delton on Thursday, Sept. 4.

Chris Miller and Trevor Morris combined for the shutout in goal, each playing a half.

“This is a great game for a coach, because I was able to get everyone in and guys who might not usually get a lot of minutes got the chance to play more,” Allegan coach Scott Evans said. “Overall, we pretty much dominated play.”

Hal Truax and Michael Wallace each scored three goals, while Jacob Caines had the other tally. Wallace also assisted on two goals, and Truax helped out on one score.

Otsego 3 Gobles 1

Three different players scored for Otsego and three more picked up assists as the Bulldogs downed Gobles in a non-league showdown on Thursday, Sept. 4.

The win snapped a three-game losing skid for Otsego, upping its record to 2-4.

Alberto Selby-Lopez, Dylan Richards and Kyle Cupp all found the back of the net for the Bulldogs. Mason Bond, Ethan Trobeck and Kyle Rohr, meanwhile, each had an assist.

Plainwell 3 Paw Paw 1

It had to happen.

Eventually, someone had to score on the Plainwell defense and keeper Seth Vincent. That time finally came in the waning minutes of the Trojans’ Wolverine Conference opener with Paw Paw on Wednesday, Sept. 3.

The goal was the first allowed by Plainwell after starting the season with five consecutive shutouts.

“It was disappointing,” Plainwell coach Garry Snyder said. “The guys were proud of that streak, and they wanted to keep it going as long as they could.”

Although Plainwell’s streak of shutouts is over, its streak of wins is not as the Trojans still won the game easily.

“The way some of them were acting, you would have thought we lost the game,” Snyder said. “They were bummed about giving up that goal, especially so late in the game. But now we need to start a new streak and keep it going.”

Offensively, Shane Lyons scored two goals for Plainwell, with Daniel Hampsten accounting for the other. Eric Beery had the assist on Hampsten’s tally.

Allegan 3 Three Rivers 2

It’s a safe bet that Allegan keeper Trevor Morris won’t soon forget his performance against Three Rivers on Wednesday, Sept. 3.

Morris came up with saves on a pair of second-half penalty kicks to preserve a one-goal win for the Ti-gers in their Wolverine Conference opener.

“Trevor came up huge,” Allegan coach Scott Evans said. “To save one PK is great, but to come up with two saves on PKs is unbelievable.”

Offensively, Hal Truax led Allegan with a goal and an assist. Michael Wallace and Jacob Caines also scored, while Luis Hernandez had an assist.

Otsego 1 Gull Lake 5

Kyle Lincoln gave Otsego fans something to cheer about in the early stages of the Bulldogs’ Wolverine Conference game with Gull Lake on Wednesday, Sept. 3.

Just 3:24 in the contest, Lincoln scored off an assist from David Gaddis to give Otsego the quick 1-0 lead.

As it turned out, it would be Otsego’s only tally.

Gull Lake tied the score on a goal by Adam Somples less than two minutes after Lincoln found the back of the net. It was the first of five unanswered goals as the Blue Devils dropped Otsego to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in league play.
