Rec plan input sought

Wednesday, July 23, 2008 5:12 PM EDT

Want input on updating the 2002 Saugatuck-Douglas Area Parks and Recreation Plan? You have until Aug. 18 to act.

Saugatuck, Douglas, Saugatuck Township and Saugatuck Public Schools are working jointly to update the plan, which helps guide facility programming and funding decisions, plus makes the community eligible for various state grant programs.

“The Michigan Department of Natural Resources wants plan updates every five years to serve as a base for awarding grants,” said SPS community recreation director Scott Kirzek, whose department is coordinating local efforts.

The four entities have paid $2,000 apiece to have LSL Planning Inc. principal planner Brenda Moore gather individual plans from each, assess public input and new developments, then prepare an overall plan attuned to state grant preferences, standards and expectations.

“We’ve already seen results from the 2002 plans,” Kierzek said, noting tennis courts added near Saugatuck High School and the township’s 1.7-mile bike trail built last year.

A 30-day public review is needed to make the new plan official, along with a public hearing set Aug. 18 at Saugatuck City Hall, 102 Butler St., at 6 p.m.

Plan copies are available through Aug. 16 at both city halls, the township hall and SPS central office building. It may also be viewed at these Web sites: www.saugatuckcity.com/web-pages/breaking-news.htm, www.douglasmichigan.com, www.saugatucktownship.org and www.saugatuckps.com.
