Allegan posts win over Otsego on mats
Through the first four matches, the Wolverine Conference wrestling showdown between Allegan and host Otsego on Wednesday, Jan. 18, remained a close affair.
Each team had secured a pair of wins, with the Tigers holding a slim 12-10 lead.
The remainder of the competition wasn’t quite as close.
Allegan won eight of the final 10 matches—five of them via forfeit—and cruised to the 57-22 victory over the Bulldogs.
As a result, Allegan remained unbeaten in league action.
Of Allegan’s five contested victories, four came by way of pin. None of those pins was more impressive than the one turned in by Tyson Mead.
Mead needed just 26 seconds to defeat Adam Holden in their 125-pound match.
Chase Beard and Davynn Schneider also posted first-period pins for Allegan. Beard bested Deven Cavazos in 1:10 at 285, while Schneider defeated Caleb Letts in 1:41 at 119.
The remaining Allegan pin came from Jeff Caldarona, who stopped Brandan Nelson at the 1:42 mark of the second period.
Gabe Butzke accounted for the other contested win by the Tigers, earning an 11-8 decision over Tyler Crabtree at 140.
Austin Fulmer (112), Tyler Mead (130), Jared Key (145), Jahron Coulson (160) and Jason Macherzak (171) all won by forfeit to round out Allegan’s victories.
For Otsego, Bryan McEwen, Devonte Madison and Jacob Case all earned pins. McEwen beat Jess Burchfield in 1:17 at 189, Madison stopped Tristan Mohrland in 1:54 at 135 and Case defeated Tristan Jacobs in 4:54 at 152.
The other Otsego win came from Joshua Sunnerville, who posted a 17-3 major decision over Tyson Emmons at 103.
Allegan was back in action on Saturday, Jan. 21, as the Tigers traveled to Hudson to participate in the Super 16.
Three Tigers placed, led by a winning effort from Beard at 285. Coulson was third at 160 and Schneider was fifth at 119.
