Truck crash spills fertilizer

Cleanup closes US-131 Wayland ramp

WAYLAND—A semi-truck overturned and spilled its load of liquid fertilizer onto the entrance ramp from 135th Avenue to northbound US-131.

According to the Allegan County Sheriff Department, emergency responders were called about 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 8, and the entrance to the expressway had to be closed for several hours while the spill was cleaned up.

The sheriff department said the truck driver had taken a left turn onto the on-ramp too fast and the load in his double tanker trailer shifted, flipping it over and spilling the fertilizer as well as fuel from the truck’s tank.

The driver, a 47-year-old Hopkins man, was not injured but was cited because of the speed. Police said alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

The Wayland Fire Department dealt with hazardous materials issues and the Michigan State Police and Gun Lake Tribal Police also assisted at the crash scene.
