Dorr selects Fordham as new fire chief

Virginia Ransbottom, Staff Writer

Dorr Township assistant fire chief Gary Fordham was selected as the new fire chief by the township board on Tuesday, May 27.

Fordham will take over as chief July 1 when current fire chief Harold Schumaker retires after 42 years as a Dorr firefighter, serving the past 12 years as chief.
Schumaker took over as chief, succeeding fire chief William Fifelski Sr. in 2001.
William Fifelski Jr. was the other applicant vying for the position. He had served as assistant chief until Schumaker appointed Fordham as assistant chief, effective April 1.
Schumaker said Fordham had stepped up and effectively run the department when the current chief and assistant chief were going through some health and personal issues.
Supervisor Jeff Miling said the choice was a very difficult one since both applicants were highly experienced.
“In deciding who is best qualified for the job, we asked firefighters and got eight votes for Fifelski and six for Fordham.”
However, clerk Brian Boot reminded the board that even more firefighters didn’t vote for either one.
