Allegan closes in on MEDC certification

Virginia Ransbottom, Staff Writer

The City of Allegan is about six months away from becoming certified as a Redevelopment Ready Community by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.

Allegan could possibly be the first to receive the designation by the state of Michigan, said Redevelopment Ready Communities planner Michelle Parkkonen, while presenting evaluation findings.
City manager Rob Hillard said once a community is certified as “redevelopment ready,” they are first in line to be introduced by the state to potential business investors. The purpose of the certification process is to ensure communities show transparency in rules for development which creates a streamlined experience for investors, businesses and residents.
Parkkonen said in a time when businesses can locate anywhere in the world, a community dedicated to a proactive approach for redevelopment and straightforward procedures will stand out.
