Allegan Church offers free mother's day concert

A free Mother’s Day concert is being sponsored by First Presbyterian Church of Allegan on Sunday, May 11, at 7 p.m. at Griswold Auditorium.

“Five Mystical Songs” by Ralph Vaughan Williams under the direction of conductor Jeff Spenner will feature baritone soloist Joel Snyder plus members of the Rockford Community Orchestra and four different choirs.

Free will donations will benefit Sylvia’s Place.

Spenner, who directs the congregation’s choir, recently earned a master’s degree in conducting from Western Michigan University and directs a number of other area groups, including the Rockford Community Orchestra, the Rockford Community Choir, the Borgess Resounding Spirit Choir and the Westwood Christian Reformed Church of Kalamazoo choirs.

Snyder, the vocal soloist, earned a master’s in voice performance from Eastern Michigan University and directs the Battle Creek Boys Choir which is headed to perform in Italy this spring.

This performance will feature a composition written by Ralph Vaughan Williams sometime between 1906 and 1911 that sets four poems by seventeenth-century Welsh-born English poet and Anglican priest George Herbert to music.
