Man arrested after hitting tree in Otsego running from police
A man fleeing police injured only himself in a car crash early Tuesday, Dec. 23, in Otsego.
According to Michigan State Police, a trooper pulled the man over for speeding about 6:30 a.m. on southbound US-131 near the 106th Avenue exit. The driver pulled over and told the trooper he didn’t have identification. The trooper suspected the man was intoxicated and was going to investigate that further when the driver sped away.
He got off the expressway and drove west on M-89 but lost control on the curve near Platt Street and hit a tree in the yard of a house.
State police said the driver was injured and he was taken to Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo for treatment.
Police eventually learned the car had been reported stolen in Battle Creek and the driver proved to have a suspended license for previous convictions and several warrants for his arrest, including one for a home invasion.
Police are seeking charges of operating while intoxicated, fleeing and eluding police, resisting and obstructing police, possession of a stolen car, driving on a suspended license, as well the warrants.
The Allegan County Sheriff Department, Otsego Police Department, Plainwell Department of Public Safety, the Otsego Fire Department and Plainwell EMS assisted at the scene.
