Child abuse charges against a Plainwell area man will continue in Allegan County Circuit Court.

Allegan County District Judge William A. Baillargeon ruled Monday, April 21, there was enough evidence for the case against Anthony Ray McFarlane, Jr. to continue.

McFarlane, 23, is charged with first-degree child abuse  and an additional count of second-degree child abuse.

During the hearing, a pediatrician testified that the injuries McFarlane’s infant daughter suffered were consistent with severe physical abuse.

McFarlane is awaiting sentencing after pleading no contest to a charge related to a stabbing in Otsego that happened in January 2013. Family and supporters rallied to McFarlane’s defense on-line and outside the Allegan County Courthouse, arguing he needed treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder suffered while serving in the U.S. Army in Afghanistan. He scheduled for sentencing Monday, May 5.
