Starr leads Otsego boys to 11th-place finish at state finals
That’s all that stood in the way of Jacob Starr and All-State accolades during his sophomore campaign last year.
He made sure he wasn’t on the outside looking in again this season.
Running a personal record time of 16:16 at the Division 2 state finals on Saturday, Nov. 1, Starr finished 19th overall and 14th among team runners to earn All-State honors and lead his team to an 11th-place finish.
Otsego coach Steve Long wasn’t surprised to see Starr excel on the biggest stage.
“Jacob led the way for us all year long and he really stepped up today,” Long said. “He just missed All-State honors last year as a sophomore, but he wasn’t going to let that happen again this year. He had a personal best on a cold, windy day.”
And while the 11th-place team showing was six places lower than the Bulldogs finished a year ago, Long said his athletes had nothing about which to hang their heads. In fact, he called the showing “just as impressive” as the runner-up finish posted by the Otsego girls’ team.
“The boys did an amazing job,” he said. “We graduated three of our top four runners from last year, so to come back with an 11th place finish was amazing.”
Two of those three graduated runners were Tyler and Justin Starr, Jacob Starr’s older twin brothers who ran for Lansing Community College this year.
Will Finch was the second finisher for Otsego, clocking a 16:43 that was good for 60th overall and 39th among team runners. The time was also good enough to make him the top freshman at the race.
