Wayland softball earns sixth consecutive district crown

Anything you can do, I can do better.
That’s what the Wayland softball team, through its actions, said to Middleville in the first inning of a Division 2 district championship game on Saturday, May 31.
Trailing 1-0 following a Middleville solo home run in the top of the first inning, the Wildcats responded with a solo shot of their own as Sam Merren knotted the game at 1-1. That jumpstarted a three-run rally by Wayland in the frame en route to a 5-1 victory.
The district title is the sixth straight for the Wildcats.
“It was nice we were able to answer right back after they’d scored in the top of the first inning,” Wayland coach Cheri Ritz said. “Sam’s home run was big and to tack on those other two runs were huge.”
