Six local wrestlers earn All-State honors at individual finals
AUBURN HILLS—Seven members of the Allegan wrestling team traveled to The Palace of Auburn Hills for the Division 2 individual state finals from Thursday, March 3, to Saturday, March 5.
More than half of those made their way onto the podium as All-State honorees.
Davynn Schneider (103 pounds), Trey Boerman (160), Levi Sabin (171) and Austin Farrell (189) all finished sixth in their respective weight classes.
The top eight finishers in each weight class are named All-State.
Allegan coach Murray Rose was obviously proud of the results turned in by his wrestlers. At the same time, he knows they wanted more.
“I’m always happy to see kids succeed with hard work,” Rose said. “Although I’m happy to have four kids make All-State honors, I know that they are all extremely disappointed to have not placed higher on the podium.”
Rose made special mention of Schneider’s final match, during which he was battling Warren Woods-Tower’s David Stepanian for fifth place.
Schneider fell 4-3.
“At the state level there are so many close matches,” Rose said. “I thought that Davynn had a great tournament.”
Of the three Allegan wrestlers who failed to reach the podium, Joey Orr (135) and Ricky Jefferson (130) each won one match and dropped two. Jake Orr lost both of his matches at 112.
“The wrestlers we had who didn’t place all came very close,” Rose said. “And on the bright side, we have several tough kids returning for next year to lead the team in 2017.”
In Division 4, Martin had six wrestlers competing at the state finals.
Dayton VanderPloeg turned in the best showing of that group, placing fourth at 130. Teammate Todd Myers also garnered All-State honors with his seventh-place showing at 152.
In Division 3, Otsego’s Adam Bolyard dropped both of his matches at 152.
