Members of the combined Martin/Climax-Scotts wrestling team makes their way onto the mats for their Division 4 state quarterfinal match at Kellogg Arena. If the Clippers were to advance to the quarterfinals next season, they would compete at Central Michigan University’s McGuirk Arena as the Michigan High School Athletic Association has changed venues.

MHSAA moves team wrestling finals from Battle Creek to Mt. Pleasant

Allegan and Martin were among the wrestling teams to qualify for the state quarterfinals in their respective divisions and, as a result, take part in finals weekend.
But if those schools—or any other in Allegan County—achieve that same level of success next season, they—and their fans—will find themselves facing a bit of a longer drive.
The Michigan High School Athletic Association recently announced its decision to shift the team wrestling finals from Battle Creek’s Kellogg Arena to Central Michigan University’s McGuirk Arena in Mt. Pleasant.
Kellogg Arena had hosted the tournament since 1988.
According to MHSAA executive director Jack Roberts, the move from Battle Creek to Mt. Pleasant will be a good one for the student-athletes involved.
“We are grateful to the athletic directors, staff and volunteers whose time and energy factored heavily into creating and growing the team wrestling finals at Kellogg Arena,” Roberts said. “The decision to move from Battle Creek was not an easy one.
“However, we believe Central Michigan University offers us a fantastic opportunity to continue growing one of our most popular championship events.”
The venue change caught Martin wrestling coach Pete Boyd off guard.
“Truthfully, I was kind of shocked they moved the venue since Kellogg has always done a fantastic job,” Boyd said. “I’ve never heard a single complaint about the folks at Kellogg and we’ve never been asked to vote or rate the experience. I have been to Rose Arena and watched CMU wrestle, but I don’t recall it being as spacious and user-friendly as Kellogg.”
