Martin upends Gobles
The outcome of Martin’s SAC North game with Bangor was never in serious doubt.
The Clippers outscored the Vikings 11-4 in the first quarter and never looked back in securing the Friday, Feb. 6, matchup by a 55-43 final.
Martin led 34-20 at halftime and 46-28 entering the final period.
“Bangor battled all night long, but we were able to gain control of the tempo every time they made a run at us,” Martin coach David Curry said. “It’s something we have struggled with in the past, but the kids did a great job of stopping their run and making one of our own each time it happened.”
Tanner Curry had another big night for Martin, posting a game-best 18 rebounds to go with 19 points. Only teammate Garrett Dill scored more points than Tanner Curry, going for a game-topping 20.
Brandon Buell added eight rebounds, with Colton Keyzer going for nine points and six rebounds.
“Tanner and Brandon have done a tremendous job on the boards lately, limiting our opponents’ opportunities to score,” David Curry said.
Defensively, the elder Curry pointed to the effort of Andrew Keyzer and Scotty Schepanek-Kerley as a key.
“We executed our game plan of shutting down their big gun, who has been scoring 25-plus on any given night,” David Curry said. “We held him to 15 with great defensive efforts from Andrew and Scotty. The rest of the team did a great job of helping out in the paint.”
The win upped Martin’s record to 6-8 overall and 4-3 in the SAC North.
“Hopefully this win gives our kids some confidence down the stretch to make a good run in the last third of our season,” David Curry said. “Right now they’re playing the way I’ve expected them to play all year.”
