Lord helps propel Allegan past Fennville
The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
That’s the way Allegan soccer coach Roberto Gonzalez would describe his team this season.
“The boys are working hard together,” Gonzalez said. “Without a real standout player, we rely on a group effort to succeed.”
Even so, there are games when certain players will stand out for the Tigers. And in a non-league showdown with Fennville on Monday, Sept. 8, it was Preston Lord’s turn to do just that.
Lord scored one goal and assisted on another to lead Allegan to the 2-1 victory over the visiting Blackhawks.
Joey Orr also scored for the Tigers (6-3), who led 1-0 at halftime and were up 2-0 with less than 11 minutes to play in the game. Zach Fabijancic chipped in with an assist on Lord’s goal.
Despite coming up short, Fennville coach Kyle Nevenzel was far from displeased with his team.
“I was really happy with the way we played,” Nevenzel said. “I thought our possession was excellent, we moved the ball around really well, switched fields and gave ourselves excellent opportunities.”
After keeping the Blackhawks scoreless for the first 70 minutes of play, the Tigers allowed a goal with about 10 minutes left to play as Carlos DelaRosa found the back of the net.
But Fennville (2-2) would get no closer.
