Clipper wrestlers split pair of league matches

The combined Martin/Climax-Scotts wrestling team has been paired up with Fennville for quad matches this season, and the teams faced SAC rivals Marcellus and Decatur on Wednesday, Jan. 21.
The M-CS team had little trouble with Marcellus, defeating the Wildcats 63-18. But Decatur was a different story as the Raiders, ranked 4th in Division 4, posted the 59-18 win.
Still, Martin coach Pete Boyd is pleased with how his team has gelled with the two schools.
He said, “Climax-Scotts used to partner with Athens, but they didn’t have enough wrestlers this year, so we got together to see if we could be a combined team and so far it has worked out well.
“Technically we are the team and I am the head coach, but we really all work together. Every other Tuesday we practice at the other school. During the rest of the week, we practice at our own schools. It would be nicer if they were a little closer, but we’ll take what we can get.
“On game nights, we meet each other at a common location and then come in together. So, so far, this has been good for both of us.”
On the night, Sam Smith, at 140, was a double winner posting pins in both matches.
