Bulldog golfers cruise to victory in inaugural M-89 Challenge
The Lynx Golf Course was the host course for the inaugural M-89 Challenge on Saturday, May 3, pitting the golf teams from Allegan, Otsego and Plainwell against one another in an 18-hole stroke play format with six players competing for the top four scores.
The match was the idea of new course owner and general manager Jim Szilagyi who is making some huge improvements to the course.
He said, “I really want to see more kids getting into golf and this is why I put together the M-89 challenge. This is the first event, and in the fall I’d like to have one for the girls as well.
“We’ve made a lot of improvements to the course since we took over last year. We’ve cleared out some areas that were overgrown, and the course came through a tough winter in really good shape.
“Earlier this winter we went out and dug through about two feet to see what was happening and with the snow cover we had it insulated the course nicely. The greens are in very good shape as is the course in general.
“It’s too bad the weather isn’t any better (for the players), but it was the same last year. It’s just spring golf and that means cool and wet.”
In spite of the poor weather conditions, the teams played on with Otsego winning the team title with a team total of 317. Plainwell was second with a 373 and Allegan was third with a 424.
