Local churches join Operation Christmas Child

This month, several locations in Allegan County will serve as collection sites for Operation Christmas Child—the world’s largest Christmas project of its kind.

Sponsored by Samaritan’s Purse, the program has collected and distributed shoe boxes filled with small gifts and personal care items for needy children in more than 130 countries at Christmastime.

Dunningville Reformed Church, 2559 Lincoln Road, Allegan, and Friendship Wesleyan Church of Plainwell, 1285 102nd Ave., are the two Allegan County drop-off sites and will be open Monday, Nov. 17, through Monday, Nov. 24.

Local organizers said, “The annual project is a favorite of many Allegan residents, families, churches and groups who help spread God’s love to millions of children around the world by filling shoeboxes with toys, school supplies and notes of encouragement.”

Allegan volunteer Linda Marvin said, “Operation Christmas Child is a fun project that makes a tangible difference in the life of a child facing difficult circumstances. Anyone can participate, whether young or old.”

Through the local collection points, Allegan residents hope to contribute more than 600 gift-filled shoeboxes to the 2014 global goal of reaching 10 million needy children. Since 1993, the project has delivered shoeboxes to more than 113 million children in more than 150 countries. For many of these children, a gift-filled shoebox is the first gift they have ever received.

Local organizers said anyone can drop off a gift-filled shoebox to send to a child overseas.
