Senior Jacob Vermeulen isn’t likely to soon forget his performance in Saugatuck’s boys’ basketball game with Martin on Friday, Jan. 23.
Vermeulen scored a career-high 20 points in leading the Indians past their SAC North rival 54-41 in front of an appreciative home crowd.
“Jake, who played behind some very good players last year, has been coming on but I didn’t realize he had that many points,” said Saugatuck coach Tom Kazen. “He really stepped it up tonight.”
Martin coach David Curry also had kind words for Vermeulen.
“He was hot. Give that kid credit,” Curry said.
Kazen came into the game expecting a battle.
“Those guys always play hard,” Kazen said of the Clippers. “I’m not surprised. Our scouting report showed that.”
Blake Dunn followed Vermeulen in the scoring department for Saugatuck with 16 points. Alex Segovia checked in with eight points for the host team.
