Indians cap perfect league season with win over Gobles
Winning a conference championship is always special.
Winning it with a perfect 14-0 record that culminated with a victory in the finals of the league tournament over your main nemesis the past four years?
The Saugatuck volleyball team downed Gobles 25-10, 25-17, 15-25, 25-20 in the championship match of the SAC Tournament to complete its perfect league season and claim the conference crown on Saturday, Oct. 25.
Indian coach Sherri Austin realizes what an accomplishment the unbeaten league record is.
“Going 14-0 in conference is something very special,” Austin said. “Not many teams in any sport are able to do that. I have coached many teams throughout my career and this really is something extra special. These girls are something extra special.”
The Indians had little trouble in its first two matches, beating Marcellus 25-19, 25-12 before posting a 25-14, 25-19, 25-13 win over Lawton in a semifinal clash.
That set the stage for the showdown with Gobles, a team that the Indians had been unable to defeat the past four seasons.
But this win was the third of the season for Saugatuck over the Tigers, with the first two coming at the Hopkins Invitational and a dual match at the Indians’ gym.
“Beating Gobles three times was great,” Austin said. “We—Saugatuck and Gobles—always seem to be in the mix at the top of (SAC) North and they have gotten the better of us for the past four years. So these wins were extra special and meaningful for our seniors.”
